The Meeting & the Andersons

Yesterday (Sunday), we had a W4K meeting.  Quite a lot got done.  There are plans and goals in the making.  From left to right are Brittany, Sean, Marge and Sarah.

Sarah and Brittany will be sending out an invitation for a big meeting coming up to ask for help at the Umigo fundraiser.  Also, they'll be addressing when the baskets to be raffled off are due.

Speaking of Brittany.  Here she is.  I don't have any info on her yet....that's a hint to you Brittany to let me know why you're so involved with the Relay for Life walk.

I do know she's participated in the Susan G Koman fundraiser in the past.
Thank you so much Kristin and Tom Anderson for your wonderful support with the PPP.  Your donation is very much appreciated!

What great sports you are.

The Running Potty....

The Pretty Purple Potty has been busy...busy...busy.  Here it is at Andrea Robb's house strutting its stuff.  Thank you Andrea for the wonderful donation to our team!
Erin Eddy was also kind enough to display our cause in front of her house.  I just don't know how many different ways I can thank these wonderful people for contributing to our team.

I have to admit, I look forward to where Sarah is going to display the sign.  Kristin and Rachael were kind enough let the PPP visit them for a day.

Thank you everyone, for being such great sports and keeping the potty moving from place to place.

Now for the blatant plug for money:

Two More Recipients.

Sarah has been busy, busy, busy this weekend.  Here's Don (Sarah's dad) and Ruth S.  Ruth is the latest recipient of the Pretty Purple Potty.  Wow, by the time I type this, she will have given instructions where to send it next.  Thanks so much Ruth!
During the weekend, Jack and his mom Theresa were the proud owners of the PPP.  Which means the toilet is still somewhere in Livermore.

I'm not only amazed at the great sense of humor of our adult recipients but at the support we are getting from teens.   It's refreshing to see a young male who supports and recognizes the importance of ridding this disease from existence.  Great job kiddo!

Thank you Lori! Wow....$180!

Thank you so much Lori Olsen for the fantastic contribution of $180!  Wow....what else can we say?  Your generosity is very much appreciated.

What's just as great is, you've sent Sarah out to put our lovely Pretty Purple Potty on someone else's lawn.  Keeping that little beauty moving is the entire point of this fund raiser.  Again thank you!

How about meeting another one of our Walkers for Knockers team members?  Okie dokie....world heeeeeeeeeers.....Lindsay!

How about telling us about yourself?

I have had the honor to meet and get to know Brittany and Sarah through work- ing for the American Swim Academy.

When I was asked if I wanted to be part of the Walkers for Knockers Relay for life team, without hesitation I said yes.

Fortunately my family has been lucky, and has stayed out of cancers grasp for now. But I have numerous friends, and friends parents who haven't been so lucky. I have participated in a few Relay for Life events growing up, but they didn't have the meaning that this particular event has. I want to do this for all those who have cancer, had cancer or might get cancer one day.

The fight is on!

Meet the Gardner Girls & Dustin

Now this is proof we have a cool toilet.  How many young teenage girls would be willing to pose with it if it wasn't?

The toilet left Rose and Herb's house and landed at their neighbors.   Ken and Donna are not only great sports but their daughters are also.

I understand, the toilet might make a few more houses on this particular street.  That's just fine with us.  Keep sending that little beauty out and keep it raising money for American Cancer Society.

Let's meet Dustin now.  We have to introduce him just
so you don't think Scott is the only male member of our team.  We're not sexist.  We'll take male and female feet for the walk.  After all, cancer doesn't care about sex, religion or race.

My name is Dustin Taylor Lionbarger.  I was reeled into this organization by our fearless leader Sarah. This will be the first relay for life for me and I'm already enjoying it.

This picture is of myself and my Grandpa Taylor. We happened to be wearing the exact same thing on the day we went camping! He was my best friend and lived a full happy life. He and my Grandma loved to camp and vacation in Hawaii. He battled through multiple types of cancer but from what I remember he acted and seemed as healthy as an ox.

Now for the blatant beg for money.  If you've already donated, we thank you so much.  How about talking someone else into donating?    Yep, we'll take their money too!

The Captain's Family....

The toilet has been parked at our co-captain's (Sarah) grandparents house.  So, world meet Herb and Rose.  If you've been reading the blog, you'd know that's Nancy in the middle.  She was the first recipient of the PPP.

I think the toilet will be moving again today.  But in the meantime, I thought I'd take the opportunity to introduce you to our co-captain Sarah and her husband, Scott.

Okay, I'll admit to being partial on this one because Scott is my son and Sarah is my daughter-in-law.

Before you look at the pictures, I have to tell you Scott hates having his picture taken.  Seriously, it was like pulling teeth to get him to stand still for pictures when he and Sarah got married.

It's time to meet one of the captains.  I was going to say half the brains of the team but that doesn't sound very good so I'll hush up now and print what she has to say in her introduction.
Hello everyone!  I'm Sarah and Co-captain of Walker for Knockers.  I began this team with Brittany after some life altering events.  This year, breast cancer hit too close to home.  That left me with an overwhelming urge to do something positive.

On June 26th, you'll catch me doing a million things for our team.  I'll be on the track whenever I'm needed, along with fundraisers and activities during our relay.

Here's a picture of my hubby, Scott.  As our resident late-bird, he'll be out there during the night hours of the relay.  I'm planning on having a great time while raising awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society.

See you all on the track!
Last but not least.................

Pint size recipient of the Pretty Purple Potty...

Well, the toilet has not made it out of Livermore.  It's a city filled with pretty good sports, so it could be there awhile.

This is John David, he has to be our youngest recipient of the PPP.  It would appear he's so young he hasn't quite grasp the use of a toilet.  He thinks it's a nice big chair for his doggie.
I love how Sarah finds a different way to display the sign each time.  Now that's what I call creative!  Keep up the good work, kiddo!

Okay, he's found the lid works!
Thanks to the Hubbards, Wootens and now the Cloynes, we've raised $70 to add to our team goal for Cancer Research.

That's not bad considering we initiated this fundraiser just a few short days ago.

I want to thank everyone who's participated on this project so far and to those of you who will donate in the future.  There are so many charities out there, I know it's hard to pick which one to contribute to.

All I know is, of all the diseases out there, cancer is the one who has hit virtually every household.  Whether it's a family member who has won or lost a battle to this disease, a co-worker or friend.  I believe almost everyone has had to deal with the sadness cancer brings to our hearts.

Lightening Fast Speed....

Wow!  I'm wondering if the paint on this poor little toilet is going to smear with the speed in which it's going from place to place.

Here it is ever so briefly at the Wooten's house in Livermore.  I don't think it was there long enough to make an imprint in the lawn.

It's now still hot from the move at......oops, almost gave that one away.

Ahhhh....you'll have to check in tomorrow to see where it is.

It was pouring all day yesterday.  Sarah said it was an adventure moving the toilet in the rain.  Now...why didn't she take pictures of that?

I know how awkward it was moving it from the car to my garage in order to paint it.  I can imagine how tricky it is to move it wet and slippery.

So Sarah, if you drop it, do we get a new one to decorate or just put it back together with duct tape?  Let's hope you don't have to make that decision.

Ah Ha! There it is!

The lucky recipients of the Pretty Purple Potty are........Nancy & Don Hubbard!  Yep.  They were honored with the little beast and proudly displayed it in their front yard for the world to see.

I think this is going to be a wonderfully active project.  Apparently, a guy approached Sarah when she went to remove the toilet and asked if he could pay $30 and have it sent to his mother's business.  He promised to have the donation next week.  Soooo....when we see the green, his mom will see the purple.

If you know someone who wants to donate $30 and request we send it someplace special, please let Brittany or Sarah know.  Trust me, these women can be bought!  Hahahahahahaha!  Sorry ladies, I mean that in the nicest way.

Check in tomorrow night and I'll introduce you to one of our co-captains.  She just happens to be Nancy's daughter.

Meet The First Member of the Team...

We've asked each member to send us a picture and tell us about themselves so you can get to know who's trying to raise money for cancer research.  I figure putting a face or personality to the fight, might help some of you open your wallets and help us out.

Since I haven't received any pictures, I thought I'd introduce myself first.  I'm Patricia.  I'm in charge of keeping this blog up to date.

I was going to take a picture of myself but it's awkward and never turns out right.  So, I figured since it's my feet that will get a workout doing all the walking in June, then that's what you should meet.  So feet, meet the world.

I'm Sarah's (our co-captain) mother-in-law and I run a small embroidery business.  Hopefully, you'll see some of my work on our shirts for the relay.  I think that's called blatant advertising.  Oh well.

Because I'm her mother-in-law, that puts me above the age of 20 but below the age of 100.  As you can tell from the turned up cuffs on my pants, I'm short.  Yes, I know how to sew and fix them, I just don't have the time to deal with it these days.

Why am I participating in this relay?  This is one reason.  Meet my Aunt Phyllis.  She is dying of brain cancer as I type this.  She's putting up a fantastic fight and her attitude if amazing, considering she knows it's a hopeless battle.

Look at that smile!  What a strong woman with a great attitude.

Here is reason number two.  This is my Aunt Darlene  (sister-in-law to Aunt P).  She just learned she has lung cancer.  She's on chemo already and is going to put up a tough fight.

As you can see, I come from a family of smiling people.  I don't want others to be robbed of beautiful smiles like these in their family.

Finally, last year I had a calcification cluster removed from my left breast.  No cancer was detected because it was caught early.  I'm now the proud owner of a titanium marker in my left breast.  I'm also here to tell you to get off your butts and get your mammograms on a regular basis.  Early detection is so darned important.

Let's see....pictures, blatant advertising for the biz, short family history and lecture to get your mammograms.  I think my job is done here.

Now all of you members on the team reading this, send me your picture and let people meet you.  Give us some history and try and keep it up beat.  Look at my smiling Aunts, talk about upbeat women!

Yes, cancer is a serious business but laughter is the best medicine.  So enjoy life and lets laugh as we watch science crush the cancer gene to death.

Now.....where's that toilet?

Flushing Out Cancer

Well, we're up and running. No pun intended.

Our first fundraising endeavor is in motion. Yep, thanks to a donation of paint from the Home Depot in San Ramon and a homeowner who is remodeling, we're ready to "Flush Out Cancer".

Dave painted this little beauty purple and Sarah decorated it. I think it's real pretty. The pictures don't do the purple justice.

The point of this pretty purple potty (say that 5 times fast) is to raise money. It looks like it's been placed at the home of the Hubbards. If they would like it removed, it will cost them $10. If they want to designate where it goes next (family, friend, co-worker), it will cost them $20.

Be careful because it can come back to you unless you pay $30. That guarantees it won't ever see your front yard again. (Well, until we do this again next year.)
The sign politely tells your neighbors what's going on. We've even included brochures in the bowl for anyone who would like to donate to our team.

Personally, I think anyone who would put their hand in a purple toilet bowl is my kind of person! I'd proudly take their money.

So, tell your friends about our fundraising idea. Have them find the toilet and donate to our team.

Check back to this site and find where in the world....okay, Tri Valley, this little beauty is sitting. Who knows....it could be your front yard next!

FYI: If you would like to donate directly to our team you can also go to:

Click on Three ways to Donate and then select if you are looking for a team member or our team in general. Type in 'Walkers for Knockers' or the name of the person you want to contribute to and you'll be taken directly to our donation page.

If you prefer, you can contact Sarah or Brittany at Walkersforknockers2010@yahoo.com and they'll be happy to accept your cash or check donation or answer any questions you might have about our team and events.

Finally, if you have a yahoo email account, you are very welcome to let us hear your comments to any of the updates on this blog. Just click on comments at the bottom of each update, sign in with your yahoo email address and let us know what you think.

If you have a specific question about the blog or team, my name is Patricia and you're very welcome to ask them. Either send me an email at the above address or post it via 'comments' on the blog. That way everyone can hear what you want to know and how it's answered.

The Race is On!

The official team is up and running. Sarah & Brittany, our co-captains, are off to a booming start trying to come up with ways to raise money. Their first idea is fantastic! As soon as it's in place, I'll post pictures and keep you up to date on what's happening.

In the meantime, if you're a team member continue to get those donations.

If you are not a member but would like to support us, you can donate to our team by going to:

http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY10CA?pg=team&fr_id=20553&team_id=653772

We all realize this is a tough economy but if you can spare $5, we would really appreciate it. Our theory is, a bunch of small donations added together, end up being a big donation. So don't think because you can only spare a few dollars it doesn't count, because it does.

Keep checking in and see what the Walkers for Knockers 2010 team is up to.
